CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Foundations: Foundations is a beginner friendly class designed to give emphasis on the fundamentals of postures, alignment, and breath.  This class will help to build a solid and safe foundation for a yoga practice.

Form: Form classes are moderately paced with a high focus on alignment in each pose.  Classes can be full spectrum or focused more heavily on one area of the body.  Students should expect to work with a plethora of props in order to facilitate optimal alignment.

Vinyasa (1/2):  Vinyasa links postures through a sequence of movements that flow with the breath.  Less rest is given between each pose; therefore maintaining even and steady breath is crucial.  Inversions and arm balances may be explored.  Some Vinyasa classes will be full spectrum, working the entire body and steadily flowing throughout, while others may work a category of poses or work towards a peak pose.

Vinyasa (2/3): This is a level 2/3 Vinyasa class designed to explore more complex asanas.  Expect an active and upbeat class with few pauses, in which students are required to use control of their breath to both stay present and respect their limits.  This class is suitable for experienced practitioners in generally good health who are looking to explore more challenging sequences, postures, and subtle practices.  Students should be prepared to work on inversions and arm balances throughout every class, as well as explore more advanced backbends.  Focus is on play, movement, hard work, and breath.

Power Hour:  This is a level 2 Vinyasa class that links postures through a sequence of movements that flow with the breath.  Less rest is given between each pose; therefore maintaining even and steady breath is crucial.  Inversions and arm balances will be explored.

Advanced Practice: This is an alignment-based, advanced class for experienced yogis. The class begins as a guided practice with the instructor practicing alongside students (ample yoga knowledge is assumed; expect minimal adjustments and cueing). As the practice continues, students will have the opportunity to be assisted in current areas of personal exploration or stay on the class trajectory. Practice the entire class time or leave when you choose. A regular, steady practice at the studio is required before attending this class. Students are expected to be able to kick into handstand (at the wall) and press up into urdhva dhanurasana with straight arms (although exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis with prior teacher approval). If you have never attended and are not sure if this class is appropriate for you, please contact the studio in advance.

Peak Practice: This is a shorter version of Advanced Practice class in which each class will be focused on a particular peak pose or poses.  In this intermediate/advanced, workshop-like class the instructor practices alongside students (ample yoga knowledge is assumed so expect minimal adjustments). A regular, steady practice is expected before attending this class. Students are expected to be able to kick into handstand (at the wall) and press up into urdhva dhanurasana with straight arms (although exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis with prior teacher approval). If you are not sure if this class is appropriate for you, please contact the studio.

Vin Yin: Spend the first half of your practice with a vinyasa flow to heat the body. Then during the second half of class spend longer holds in yin postures. Re-energize and renew in this two for one!

Restorative: The focus of this class is eliciting the body’s own relaxation response, a physiological and hormonal state of calm that counters stress and its chronic negative impacts. Your luxuriously supported practice will be filled with the use of props for long, quiet holds, working the spine in all directions, creating opening and release in the body, and achieving a state of mental tranquility through breathwork, visualization, and meditation techniques.

Yin: Yin Yoga gives you the tools to slowly open up while avoiding injury.  It explores the underlying depths of your physical, mental, and emotional being.  Expect to stretch and rehabilitate the connective tissues that form your joints.

Community Class:
This class is taught by Surya Yoga Teacher Training graduates.  Donations are accepted in lieu of class fees.

Private Yoga: Private yoga sessions are available and tailored to a student’s individual needs.  Please contact info@suryayogastudio.com for more information.
